1. A plane mirror is a flat smooth surface which reflects most of the light falling on it.
2. Laws of reflection :
- The incident ray, the reflected ray, and the normal are all lie in the same plane.
- The angle of incidence = the angle of reflection.
3. Characteristics of an image formed in a plane mirror : -
- The image is virtual.
- The image is upright but laterally inverted.
- The size of the image is the same as the object.
- The distance between image and mirror is the same as the distance between object and mirror.
4. An image, which cannot be formed on a screen, is called a virtual image.
5. Lateral inversion = a left-right reversal
6. Upright = no top-bottom reversal
7. In general : -
8. Apparatus using the same principle : -
- Mirror periscope
- Kaleidoscope
- Optical testing
- Anti-parallax mirror in ammeters (voltmeters)
